What do making wine and practicing medicine have in common? More than you might think.

Just ask Ed Gomez and Ellen Mack, owners of Russian Hill Estate Winery in the Russian River appellation of Sonoma County.

Wine requires an understanding of chemistry. Both developing a good wine and becoming a skilled doctor are a long and complex process, demanding total dedication. Or so these two former academic physicians would tell you. And Dr. Mack regards the vines in the vineyard as her patients, treating each as individuals needing tender loving care.

Careful care is a theme that runs throughout the operation of this family-owned winery. Ed, Ellen and their nephew Patrick Melley, the winemaker, do it all, from pruning the vines to crushing the grapes and operating the bottling line. The summer fog and cool evenings create ideal climatic conditions for growing the pinot noir, syrah and chardonnay grapes that go into the bottles.

Russian Hill's goal is to produce elegant wine that is lush, pretty and, most of all, food friendly. Wine is a food and should get along with all its relatives, says Ed.

While many doctors own wineries, few make better wine than Ed and Ellen. In fact, their syrahs and pinot noirs have been consistent winners at wine competitions and their Gail Ann's Vineyard 2001 Chardonnay, reminiscent of a Chablis, won a gold medal at the 2003 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition.

The public will have an opportunity to taste these and other Russian Hill wines in a new tasting room, which will be ready this summer. You won't have trouble finding this winery. The estate's southern plantation-style house sits on the top of a hill overlooking what may be the best view in Sonoma County. You can't miss it, but if you do just ask for Tara. It's a local landmark - and a great setting for weddings, parties and corporate events.
