Romancing the Rhones again!

Over the last eleven years, Affairs of the Vine has conducted 26 unique Wine Shootouts. Our Pinot Noir Shootout and Cabernet Shootouts have been repeated year after year. Last year we decided it was time to Rhone!

This year’s Affairs of the Vine 2013 International Rhone Shootout is gearing up as we begin the preliminary tastings in the coming weeks. The competition concludes with the Rhone Shootout Finals scheduled for June 15th in San Francisco.

Affairs of the Vine invites producers, importers and marketing companies from around the world to enter their wines in this comprehensive and unique tasting. Preliminary tastings begin soon. Submit your wines

For complete details on the Rhone Shootout and the Romancing the Rhones celebration click here.

Upon completion of this year’s competition, wineries will showcase their Rhone style wines at the Annual Romancing The Rhones event on Sunday, July 14th in celebration of Bastille Day in San Francisco. If you’re a Rhone wine lover, you’ll want to join us on July 14th to embrace these wines. Tickets go on sale May 14.

This year’s competition follows on the heels of the 2012 International Rhone Shootout when 267 wines did battle for top honors and recognition. Last year’s Romancing the Rhone event attracted over 400 Rhone wine lovers and 46 wineries to celebrate the continued development and emergence of excellence in Rhone varietal winemaking.

Romancing the Rhones, is the culmination of the Rhone Shootout. There will be great food and live music to add to the merriment. Attendees will have the opportunity to judge the wines in a blind tasting, taste with the winemakers, enjoy Rhone friendly food, and just have fun. See pictures from last year’s event here.

I’ve been asked, “Why Rhones?” The Rhone Shootout evolved as request after request came in from wineries who had participated in our Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon Shootouts over the years. This year will mark our 12th Pinot Noir Shootout and 8th Cabernet Shootout Challenge so doing a Rhone program was a natural.

The Shootouts are a fascinating way for consumers (and wine professionals) to discover wines and wineries they’ve never heard of, or to rediscover old favorites.

Wines taking home top honors in last year’s competition represented different Rhone varietals from numerous appellations including Derby Estates…more

We had an amazing day! The workshops were stellar. The blind tasting competition was intense. Charlotte Chippenfield and Rachel Voorhees were on the floor to guide the many palates who were focused on finding their favorite wines among the 42 finalists.

Thank you to all of the participating wineries. The Grand Awards tasting was awesome. Great wine and great food was shared with the crowd of over 500 wine lovers. We had to turn people away.

Complete Results of the 11th Annual Pinot Noir Shootout and Summit here

Pinot Noir, the most exciting, confounding, and challenging wine there is has been the focus of the Pinot Noir Shootout and Summit for 11 years. We never tire of tasting these wines, enjoying old friends and discovering new ones.

In this, the 11th Annual Pinot Noir Shootout, the Affairs of the Vine professional judging panel tasted over 460 Pinot Noirs from all over the globe. Many of the wines we taste continue to delight and fascinate us. Those will be noted here. Every year we find outstanding examples of Pinot Noir from wineries that we know and we’re often pleasantly surprised by wines submitted from producers new to us.

The Pinot Noir Shootout is the most comprehensive and focused tasting of Pinot Noir in the U.S. The judging panel, an incredibly diverse panel of 40 wine professionals, tasted 460+ wines over a three-month period. Just 32 wines are tasted by the experts per day, allowing the judges to be completely immersed, focused and fair to the wines. Palate fatigue is not a factor in our tastings. The wines are tasted completely blind without reference to appellation, vintage or price. Each wine submitted to the Pinot Noir Shootout was tasted a minimum of twice. The top rated wines were then tasted by our panel of experts at the Pinot Noir Shootout Finals on December28, 2011. Again, each judge was responsible for tasting, scoring, and analyzing only 32 wines.

Detailed notes accompany the scores of each judge. Gender counts…scores and comments are recorded separately and posted on the Affairs of the Vine website.

The Pinot Noir Shootout is the only wine competition in which the judges’ conclusions are put to the test by a large unbiased group of wine lovers. 42 of the top-rated wines were featured at The 11th Annual Pinot Noir Summit on March 16, 2013 at Herbst at the Presidio.

At the Summit, over 300 adventurous Pinot Noir lovers, seeking true splendor in the glass, experienced and evaluated the 42 luscious Pinot Noirs in a blind tasting at the Pinot Noir Summit. The 42 wines represented some of the best wines from this year’s Pinot Noir Shootout. An additional 200 people joined the festivities for the Grand Awards Tasting on Saturday evening.

In a distinctly different format and atmosphere from other wine-tasting events, the attendees blind tasted the wines and pitted their palates against the expert judging panel. The wines were divided into 2 groups of 21 wines each (the Black Group and the Silver Group). The wines were wrapped individually and identified by a random color. The male and female votes were tallied separately.

After tasting the wines blind, the Wine Lovers at The Pinot Summit were given 5 chips (red for the women and blue for the men) and were invited to cast their votes for their favorite wines with the chips provided. They could vote for as many as 5 wines or as few as one, indicating their passion for each wine by the number of chips they dropped in the “ballot box.”voted for their top three wines in order of preference after tasting them blind.

The Pinot Noir lovers spoke out loud and clear at the 11th Annual Pinot Noir Summit. In an unmistakable statement of preference, they embraced wines of elegance and varietal authenticity rather than burly Syrah-like Pinots, the muscular Pinot Noirs made popular by a few influential reviewers and their publications.

The Pinot Noir delegates agreed with the panel…the wines tasted were fantastic! The Pinot Noir Summit delegates however, did not rank the wines in the same order. Here are the winners as announced by Tom Cutts and Charlotte Chippenfield on Saturday night, March 16th at the Grand Awards Ceremony.

They Both Battled It Out This Past Weekend

Two important challenges to the Bay Area happened this past weekend (January 19th – 20th 2013). The 49ers vs The Falcons played the NFC Championship game at the Georgia Dome with a trip to Super Bowl XLVII on the line and The 7th Cabernet Shootout Challenge at The Winery SF on Treasure Island with awards and bragging rights for the best Cabernets selected by judges and wine lovers. Like the NFC Championship game, it was a very difficult competition.

Both contests were incredibly exciting. If you’re a Niners fan, you’re celebrating the fact the 49ers are on their way to Super Bowl XLVII in New Orleans on February 3rd!

In the NFC Championship, there could only be one winner. Not so at The Cabernet Shootout Challenge.

The Cabernet Shootout has numerous winners and you can pick your favorites to enjoy again and again.

The Cabernet Shootout Challenge, attended by 359 Cabernet enthusiasts – consumers, press and trade, was a remarkable event hosted by the Bay Area Wine Society in partnership with Affairs of the Vine at The Winery SF on Treasure Island on Saturday, January 19th. One Brick was amazing in making the entire event run smoothly.

Winemakers, proprietors, and winery personnel shared their outstanding Cabernet Sauvignons, Cabernet Francs, and Cabernet Blends. Other wines produced by the wineries were also available to taste at their stations. Tasty snacks were served.

Cabernet Sauvignon, the king of red wines, is grown in nearly every wine producing region in the world. The Cabernet Shootout judging panel consisting of 25 men and 19 women had the pleasure of tasting 321 Cabernets from 36 different appellations. Read their comments and scores. Men Women

Make sure to check out the judging panels “Bang for Your Buck Wines” too, wines selling for under $20 that received 85 points or more. There’s a bunch of them!

An extraordinary array of palates gathered to assess some of the top rated wines from the Cabernet Shootout. “This distinctly different format,” noted Tom Merle, President of the Bay Area Wine Society, “provided a unique opportunity for people who buy the wine to challenge the tastes of the wine experts.”

The Cabernet Challenge consisted of just 35 of the winning wines from The 7th Cabernet Shootout. These wines were randomly divided into two flights of 17 and 18 wines each (Red Team and White Team). The Cabernet Shootout Challenge attendees were asked to focus on just one of the flights. The wines were divided randomly, wrapped in aluminum foil, and identified with color stickers.

219 of the wine lovers participated in the Cabernet Shootout and cast their votes.

Instructions to the Cabernet Shootout Challenge Wine Lovers Judging Panel

Professional wine tasters consider the following: Clarity/Appearance, Color, Aroma/Bouquet, Acidity, Sweetness, Body/Texture, Taste/Flavor, Bitterness, Astringency, Finish, Overall Quality.

All that really matters is what you like.

Our panel is very fortunate indeed to have the opportunity to taste these wonderful wines and we are very cognizant of the fact that our conclusions matter and have impact, so we take our responsibility very seriously.

Affairs of the Vine’s Shootouts are the only competition in which the judges’ conclusions are put to the test by an unbiased panel of wine lovers.

The comments on the wines at The Cabernet Shootout Challenge were amazing and the discussions engaging but in the end, each person voted their own palate. All of the wines were winners, all receiving many, many votes.

The Cabernet Shootout Challenge attendees agreed with the panel…the wines tasted were fantastic!

And now…the findings!

Male & Female Wine Lovers agreed on their absolute favorite. (Wow! Is that unusual or what?)

Look for these wines at your local fine wine retailer or online. Share them with friends and those you love. They are all well worth seeking out and tasting.

Taste and enjoy them all if you’re fortunate enough to have the opportunity. Keep buying your old favorites but try new ones too. When you find a style you like, try other wines that are similar. Do you like this wine as much? See if you can determine the similarities in the wines you like best. Is it appellation? Winemaking style? Winemaker?

If you have difficulty finding them at your local retailer, feel free to email Affairs of the Vine. We will be happy to put you in touch with someone at the winery who can help you acquire the wines that entice you.

So what do these wines have in common? Everyone one of these wines is outstanding!

Our Mantra: Trust Your Own Palate

Read reviews but remember it’s your palate that counts. Try to find a wine critic who commends wines that you like. Don’t feel that you have to like the wines that wine critics praise. Don’t be intimidated! If a movie reviewer gives 5 stars to a film, do you feel that you’re unsophisticated if you don’t like it too? Wine is no different. Personal preference is what counts. So drink and enjoy what you like. At Affairs of the Vine we say, “If you like the way it looks and you like the way it smells and you like the way it tastes…its good wine. So use our recommendations as a guide but you are the authority of what provides “Love at First Sip” for you.

My mom was rushed to the emergency where we were told several times that she wouldn’t survive more than a few days…What an emotional ride. She’s home on hospice care but has been surviving and thriving. I don’t think she has any plans to exit soon.

…The truth of the matter is that I was too emotionally wrought to put my feelings into spoken, let alone written words. For those of you who know be well, the idea of my being at a loss for words is unthinkable.

And so as 2012 comes to a close, 2013 beckons all shiny and bright. I have great hopes and plans for this year.

I am reaching out to the many friends I’ve made through Social Media. I’m back. I hope to touch base with all of you soon. Watch for my tweets.

Some Personal Notes and Observations:

Those of you who have been following me for a long time, know that I have always been ALL ABOUT PINOT.

It was Laura Ness and some of the other longtime Shootout judges that suggested more than once that we do a Rhone Shootout. I finally agreed. We put out the word and the wines came in daily with deliveries from GSO, UPS, Fedex, and DHL. 267 wines from a myriad of producers. The wines were catalogued and sorted.

Truth be told, more…

In this, the 1st year of the Rhone Shootout, the Affairs of the Vine professional judging panel tasted 267 Rhone wines, most from California and Oregon but some from Washington, Michigan and Australia. We found outstanding examples of New World Rhone wines from wineries that we know and we’re delighted by many of the wines submitted from producers new to us. The overall quality of the wines was incredible. In fact, we awarded more gold medals on a percentage basis than we have ever awarded in any previous Shootout.

The Rhone Shootout was a comprehensive and focused tasting of New World Rhones. The judging panel, an incredibly diverse panel of 52 wine professionals, tasted 267 wines over a three-month period. Just 32 wines were tasted by the experts per day, allowing the judges to be completely immersed, focused and fair to the wines. Palate fatigue is not a factor in our tastings. The wines are tasted completely blind without reference to appellation, vintage or price. Each wine submitted to the Rhone Shootout was tasted a minimum of twice. The top rated wines were then tasted by our panel of experts at the Rhone Shootout Finals on June 23, 2012. Again, each judge was responsible for tasting, scoring, and analyzing only 32 wines.

Detailed notes accompany the scores of each judge. Gender counts…scores and comments are recorded separately and posted on the Affairs of the Vine website.

The Rhone Shootout judges’ decisions were then put to the test during the Rhone Shootout Challenge at Romancing the Rhones on July 14, 2012 in San Francisco. A large unbiased group of wine lovers tasted, analyzed and voted for their favorites at The Rhone Challenge of 41 of the top wines at Romancing the Rhones on July 14, 2012 in San Francisco.

At the Romancing the Rhones, over 350 adventurous Rhone lovers, experienced and evaluated the luscious wines in a blind tasting. The 41 wines represented some of the best wines from this year’s Rhone Shootout. (There should have been 42 wines but one wine did not reach our warehouse in time to be included in the blind tasting.)

In a distinctly different format and atmosphere from other wine-tasting events, the attendees blind tasted the wines and pitted their palates against the expert judging panel. The wines were divided into 2 groups of wines. (The Blue Group and The Green Group). The wines were wrapped individually and identified by a random color. The male and female votes were tallied separately.

After tasting the wines blind, the Wine Lovers at Romancing the Rhones were given 5 chips (gold for the women and blue for the men) to cast their votes for their favorite wines. They could vote for as many as 5 wines or as few as one, indicating their passion for each wine by the number of chips they dropped in the “ballot box.”

William Allen announced the winners of the Rhone Shootout Challenge at Romancing the Rhones on July 14th.

The venue was a fitting place to hold such a celebration of gold medal winning Rhone wines: the wineries went home with a record number of Gold medals for their well-crafted wines. The highlight of these events, put on by Affairs of the Vine, was the Blind Tasting 41 of top the wines from the Rhone Shootout competition which is held in advance to determine which wines will get to face the public in disguise.

Attendees taste the wines and vote for their favorites. Men vote for their faves: women for theirs. It’s always interesting to see who likes what. Usually, the lists are quite different. However, this year, for the first time ever, men and women had something to agree on: they both selected, by an overwhelming margin, the 2007 Derby Wine Estates FIFTEEN 10 Red blend ($28) from Paso Robles. It was quite fitting that this wine was made by a woman, Tiffanee Vierra, a talented crafter of Rhones who makes some of the most balanced wines coming out of Paso. The women also selected winemaker Katy Lovell’s 2009 Poetic Cellars Mourvedre ($29), from her Livermore estate vineyard, as their # 2 favorite. The women winemakers rocked!

This post originally appeared by Laura Ness on MyVineSpace

I’ll tell you what – there’s nothing to cut through a chardonnay coma like some righteous white Rhone blends. They’re just the ticket to cut the dust off a spring or summer afternoon spent planting tomatoes or browsing a Farmer’s Market for that perfect bunch of rainbow chard or spring onions to make your weekly quiche. Hey, remember the cheesy 70’s, when quiche was as vogue as fondue? That might have been the prime of the dairy cow. We promised not to quiche and tell, but we’re gonna leak a few names from tastings at The First Annual Rhone Shootout, just in time for Romancing the Rhones, the public tasting for a whole bunch of great Rhone wines being held on Saturday, July 14, in San Francisco at The Old Mint. (http://affairsofthevine.com)

We got some blazing beauties in the first round, which featured what I call the Three Sisters of White Rhoneland: viognier, marsanne and roussanne. We discovered to our delight, a couple of viogniers that blew our doors off, including a citrus, peach and spring-flower packed punchbowl 2010 Field Stone from Alexander Valley, at 14.1% and $25. This one has that oozy peach skin finish I adore.

But not far behind on the vio-love meter is the tropically inclined passionfruit, mandarin orange and tangerine dreamlike 2010 Miner at $16. A lot to love at a tiny price, this comely Rhone is as warm and summery in the mouth as toes in the Malibu sand. And then there is the piece de viognier resistance, the 2011 Fortunati from Napa, at 14.2 and $28, filled with narcissus, lilac, minerality and flint, so lively and drinkable, we could barely bring ourselves to spit.

The distinctive 2011 ROAR viognier exemplifies barrel-fermentation, with creamy buxom butterscotchiness that oozes across the palate like a mango pana cotta with coconut cream and toasted almonds: a viognier for wood lovers! Delish, rare, and from Gary Franscioni’s new Sierra Mar vineyard in the Santa Lucia Highlands: $40. Yum. Seek it out.

On the opposite side of the spectrum, the 2011 Nottingham Cellars viognier (Arroyo Seco, $24), is a delightfully bright, athletic and light on its feet version of this often overburdened with tropical ripeness Rhone varietal. Here, it is allowed to be the athletic tomboy, racing across the palate with speed and grace.

In the viognier super-model style, RoxyAnn from the Rogue River Valley of Oregon, delivers up creamy baked pears, with a mouth-filling density very much like creme fraiche atop a grilled peach strudel: phenomenal wine!

From Santa Clara Valley, Guglielmo’s 2011 lusty marsanne shows off rich tropical fruits and coconut – in fact, it smells like a beach blanketed by babes lathered in tanning butter. Loved the Meyer lemon, bosc pear, mango, hazelnut and dried apple flavors. For $20, well-executed for this often overwrought varietal.

Still on the marsanne bandwagon, we found a lovely example from Tallulah Wines. Called “Como,” it hails from Napa and displayed beckoning aromas of tropical bread pudding, is packed with buttercream filled toasted brioche and apricot and pear pastry. Is it possible for a wine to smell so much like a French bakery on a Saturday morning? This is a dead-on execution of marsanne, insanely creamy, yet sufficiently packed with acid to carry it off. Brilliant at 14.1% and $28.

Another stunning single sister was the 2011 Hagafen roussanne, bursting forth with grilled plantains, starfruit and casawba melon, with a hint of banana pudding on the finish. Only 13.5% and $18! And, for bragging rights, recently served at a White House State dinner.

I think Rhone blends are the cat’s meow, and by and large are far more consistently fabulous than their single sister counterparts. In particular, the white blends we coaxed out of hiding proved worthy of the hunt, like the Ecluse “Prelude” from Paso, a blend of 48% viognier, 28% roussanne and 24 grenache blanc, with intriguing aromas of honeysuckle and honeycomb candles burning on an altar. White peach and vanilla custard with toffee make this a rich experience for $28.

A lovely two-step is the Jazz Cellars 2011 Rhapsody marsanne-roussanne blend from SaraLee’s vineyard in Sonoma, $33. It’s worth it for the layers upon layers of nectarine, ripe comice pear, lilac and sugar pear loveliness and the texture is raw silk divine.

R2’s Vin Blancs from Santa Barbara, plus Calcareous’s white blend and Hearthstone’s 2010 “Pearl,” both from Paso, impressed, and the 2010 GVR from South Coast Winery (Temeculah), all give reason to say, “Donnez moi un Rhone blanc, s’il vous plait!”

If all these Rhones made you curious for a new adventure, you might want to make plans to attend “Romancing the Rhones,” Saturday, July 14, at the Old Mint in San Francisco, where you’ll have the opportunity to taste 40 of the top finalists from the Rhone Shootout blind, and vote for your personal favorites. All the wineries participating in the Shootout are invited to pour, so you’ll have a wonderful array of great wines to choose from and you’ll certainly develop a new appreciation for Rhones, both whites, reds and rosés.
