Adobe Road Winery 2007 Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast, $30.00: 660 cases produced; Female: Blueberry and deep dark cherry on the nose deliver the same onto the palate. The entry is all fruit with some spice on the finish. The tannins are still prominent and overshadow the acid. Needs some time.
Male: A nicely structured wine. Good depth of fruit (dark cherry and berry), nice acidity and integrated tannins.

Adobe Road Winery 2007 O'Neel Vineyard Pinot Noir Russian River Valley, $48.00: 330 cases produced; Female: Toasty cinnamon on the nose, Warm cherry in the mouth with nice brown spices as backnotes, The tannins are still prominent but this wine will age gracefully.
Male: The pronounced cherry cream on the nose comes through on the palate with generous jammy flavors, warm spice and vanilla.

Amisfield 2007 Pinot Noir Lowburn, New Zealand, $35.00 Black: 6000 cases produced; Female: Root beer, Asian spice, soy, black cherries and plum aromas arise from the glass. Smooth on the palate. A seamless wine with lots of exotic attributes. Tannins are a bit aggressive at the finish but will mediate with time.
Male: Cola, black cherries, crushed pomegranate, and cherry liqueur on the nose. Ripe pomegranate, black cherries, cassis, and dark fruit. This is a big style with a long finish.

Ampelos Cellars 2006 Lambda Ampelos Vineyards Pinot Noir Santa Rita Hills, $35.00 Dark Red: 1000 cases produced; Female: Juicy raspberries, violets, and coffee aromas. Though the fruit is quite dark, there is an elegant quality over the mid-palate with a restrained and silky finish.
Male: This is a big Pinot with a big finish exhibiting dark fruit in the nose and in the mouth. Black cherries, plums, coffee, more dark fruit, exotic spices, and vanilla.

Ampelos Cellars 2006 Reserve Ampelos Vineyards Pinot Noir Santa Rita Hills, $45.00: 520 cases produced; Female: Light in color. There are earth notes in the restrained nose opening to candied cherry with hints of tangy citrus. The wine is delicately structured with cherry and cranberry flavors on entry getting broader mid-palate as the fruit is complemented by a touch of spice. A balanced wine with a nice finish.
Male: Light in color with a ruby rim and a light opaque center. A complex aromas of strawberry, clove, light red Rainier cherries with wood notes on the edges. Ripe red berry fruit on entry with dried spices, clove and tar join in mid-palate. The finish is full with good acidity.

Anaba Wines 2007 J McK Vineyard Pinot Noir Carneros, $32.00: 638 cases produced; Female: Mixed berry and jam aromas with hints of clove. The palate shows extracted sweet fruit flavors with a meaty aspect and a pronounced spice component. Balanced through the finish. A masculine wine.
Male: Fragrant dark cherry with sweet caramel highlights the nose. Cherry and raspberry flavors framed and balanced by oak elements.

Anglim 2007 Bien Nacido Vineyard Pinot Noir Santa Barbara County, $34.00: 135 cases produced; Female: Cherry and earth nose leads to a juicy palate with cola and mushroom accents. Nicely structured.
Male: Well balanced aromatics of fresh strawberry. Rich and full bodied flavors. Well defined.

Anglim 2007 Fiddlestix Vineyard Pinot Noir Sta. Rita Hills, $48.00: 140 cases produced; Female: Black cherry aromas repeat on the palate with heavy oak accents at present. This is a nice wine that needs time to mature. "I would suggest laying it down for a minimum of 6 months before tasting again."
Male: Intense Syrah-like nose with dark fruit attributes. Smoky and meaty notes are backnotes to the black cherry flavors. A big, powerful wine. "I like it but is it Pinot?"

Aqua Pumpkin 2007 Pinot Noir Santa Barbara County, $18.00: 1404 cases produced; Female: Cherry and earth aromas, lifted on the palate. Elegant. Juicy fruit mid-palate. Smooth tannins.
Male: Earthy, dark cherry, cedar, and leather overtones on the nose. Smoky tones on the masculine palate - hints of prune and cinnamon wrapping up with sour cherry flavors. "Good promise but not one of my favorites."

Artesa 2007 Pinot Noir Carneros, $24.00 Magenta: 20664 cases produced; Female: Forest floor and herbal aromas open to caramelized cherries scents. A beautifully structured wine with cherry and cranberry layered with enticing herbs on the lingering finish. Good oak integration and nice acidity.
Male: The nose is shy at first with exotic tea and spice components then dark plums and boysenberry aromas are revealed. Orange peel and cherry with licorice on the finish.

Artesa 2007 Estate Reserve Pinot Noir Carneros, $40.00: 3527 cases produced; Female: Cherry cough drops on the nose. Intense black cherry heavily framed by oak. Although the oak is prominent now, it will age well. It's all there.
Male: Simple. Aromas of strawberry carry through onto the palate with cranberry notes mid. Hint of bitterness on the finish.

Artesa 2007 Limited Release Pinot Noir Carneros, $50.00: 889 cases produced; Female: Smoky rhubarb, blueberry, and dark cherry aromas replicate on the palate with nice spices mid to late. Good texture and weight with a slight meatiness.
Male: Dried cherry aromatics. Cherry, clove and coffee flavors with lots of oak elements on the finish.

Balletto Vineyards 2007 Winery Block Pinot Noir Russian River Valley, $34.00 Gold: 300 cases produced; Female: Elegant and subtle. The nose is enticing - a virtual floral bouquet of violets and roses. The palate is lovely and delicate but deep with cherry flavors accented by cedar, earth and anise. The finish is smooth.
Male: "Super! Love this style! Food will make this even better." Rhubarb, cola, red berries throughout. Well balanced.

Balletto Vineyards 2007 Burnside Road Pinot Noir Russian River Valley, $34.00: 300 cases produced; Female: Sweet dark cherry and plum aromas. The mouthfeel is full with vibrant fruit and floral tones. Oak dominates the finish now.
Male: This will be a consumer favorite...full of fresh, concentrated fruit with soft tannins. Black cherry nose with a light earthy background. The texture is velvety...supple with light tannins. Well balanced and delicately structured with nice length.

Barefoot Cellars Pinot Noir California, $6.99: 387000 cases produced; Female: Cherry cream soda on the nose. Bright and sweet cherry flavors with light spice notes. Quite easy to drink.
Male: The nose had sweet floral notes. Bubble gum, cherry and light spice show on the bright, fresh palate.

Bargetto 2007 Reserve Pinot Noir Santa Cruz Mountains, $40.00: 172 cases produced; Female: The layered nose shows warm brown spice, red cherry, black cherry, and a touch of lavender. Cherry on the palate. Nice acid. A pretty wine.
Male: Rhubarb, cherry and cedar aromas. Dense palate of cherry, rhubarb and baking spice. Medium length and intensity.

Bella Sera 2008 Pinot Noir PravPav, Italy, $6.99: 100000 cases produced; Female: A nice red wine but not varietally correct for Pinot Noir.
Male: A pleasant red wine. Not a typical Pinot but would be fun with pizza.

Belle Vallee 2006 Grand Cuvee Pinot Noir Willamette Valley, $42.00: 382 cases produced; Female: Aromas of mint and crushed herbs. Light red fruit flavors with earth notes apparent on the long finish. Will work well with food.
Male: Eucalyptus, boysenberry and cedar aromas repeat on the palate with additions of black tea, porcini and mineral backnotes. Quite delicate.

Belle Vallee Cellars 2007 Reserve Pinot Noir Willamette Valley, $28.00: 1088 cases produced; Female: Leather and forest floor aromas dominate the strawberry and red cherry fruit. Pretty on entry through mid but then the hefty tannins kick in. With time, on the second time through, the fruit began to show itself. Decant before drinking or better yet, lay this down for a year or more.
Male: Toasted oak, black cherry and dried herbal aromas. The palate is layered and complex - back cherry, raspberry, cranberry and oak with an herbal finish. The seed tannins on the finish detract.

Bianchi Winery 2006 Signature Selection Garey Vineyard Pinot Noir Santa Maria, $30.00: 562 cases produced; Female: A well balanced wine. Vanilla and wild lavender aromas. Cherry, vanilla and tobacco on the palate. Tannins pop-up mid to late.
Male: Inviting nose of chocolate covered cherries, maraschino cherries, raspberry, and pine pitch. The palate is sweet on entry with bousenberry and ligonberry jam. Dusty tannins kick in late.

Big Basin Vineyards 2007 Bald Mountain Vineyard Pinot Noir Santa Cruz Mountains, $42.00: 105 cases produced; Female: Deep purple-red in color. Plum and rhubarb aromas with a smoky, earthy backdrop. Sweet blue and black fruit flavors highlighted by baking spice...a bit starchy towards the finish but overall, nice texture and weight.
Male: The color is rich and dark, almost Merlot-like. The aromas are inviting - smoky, leathery with rhubarb. The palate is rich and lush with blackberry jam flavors. Grapefruit and tea on the finish.

Big Basin Vineyards 2007 Alfaro Family Vineyard Pinot Noir Santa Cruz Mountains, $42.00 Brick: 105 cases produced; Female: Ripe and juicy cherry pie aromas accented by hints of earthiness, leather and caramel extract. The palate is round and appealing. A very approachable wine. Ripe cherry flavors with black pepper spice. Vanilla notes on the finish.
Male: Cherry, cola, spice, pomegranate, and cranberry rise from the glass. Big, rich and powerful opening on the palate. Layered and complex. Dark fruit comes out in the middle. Soft tannins enhance the purity of the fruit on the long, lingering finish.

Big Table Farm 2008 Resonance Vineyard Pinot Noir Yamhill-Carlton, $45.00: 94 cases produced; Female: Pretty nose of cherry with earthy backnotes. The palate is layered with dried cherry, cola and a touch of oak shown in the lovely vanilla notes.
Male: Lovely carbonic notes shown as bright cherry. Forward lush red fruit flavors with nice spice and good acidity.

Big Table Farm 2008 Pinot Noir Willamette Valley, $38.00: 77 cases produced; Female: Cherry, cola and citrus in the nose. Cherry on opening turning to cranberry and cola mid. Lots of oak on the finish. This is just a baby. Needs time to integrate, but it will.
Male: Bitter rhubarb and richer blueberry aromas and flavors. The palate is lean and brambly. Love the fruit aspects. The oak is very prominent now.

Bjornstad Cellars 2007 van der Kamp Vineyard Pinot noir Sonoma Mountain, $40.00: 134 cases produced; Female: Clear garnet in color with cherry aromas and hints of a green woodsy component. The aromas are repeated on the palate. At first the mid-palate seems dilutive but broadens as the wine opens - "a sign to me that the wine will age gracefully." Cherry flavors dominate with herbal notes and some chalky cola accents on the finish.
Male: A touch of barnyard opens to black fruit highlighted by pine notes. The palate is consistent.

Bjornstad Cellars 2007 Hellenthal Vineyard Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast, $40.00 Pumpkin: 195 cases produced; Female: Light garnet in color with a tinge of purple that fades out to the edge. The nose is very erotic, sexy raspberry and earthy terroir notes. The fruit is beautifully balanced with oak and cedar accents. An expressive and complex wine.
Male: The color is medium ruby at the core with a ruby rim. The nose is layered - barnyard, strawberry, vanilla, cream soda, earth, spices, and dried herbs. Soft red fruit flavors accented by vanilla and coffee. Complex and balanced.

Boekenoogen 2006 Estate, Boekenoogen Vineyard Boekenoogen Vineyard Pinot Noir Santa Lucia Highlands, $45.00: 375 cases produced; Female: Cola, berries and some tomatoes on the nose. Lush and thick on entry, the oak tannins are very there and dominate the palate.
Male: Pomegranate, cherry and tobacco aromas carry through onto the palate which is slightly sweet - loaded with fruit and smooth. Slight port-like quality on the finish.

Boekenoogen 2007 Estate, Boekenoogen Vineyard Boekenoogen Vineyard Pinot Noir Santa Lucia Highlands, $39.00: 512 cases produced

Bogle 2007 Pinot Noir Russian River Valley, $13.00: 30000 cases produced; Female: Easy to drink and enjoy. Sweet strawberry, vanilla and brown spices on the nose and on the palate. A pretty wine - a supple and elegant Pinot with moderate acidity.
Male: Cherry pie and a touch of vanilla on the nose and throughout the palate. Penetrating and persistent flavors. Silky, well made and showing good varietal definition.

Bohemian Vineyard 2008 Estate Bohemian Vineyard Pinot Noir Russian River Valley, $45.00: 250 cases produced; Female: Barnyard at first sniff, then dark cherry, plum, cocoa and hint of licorice on the nose and palate.
Male: Plum, cherry, moist earth (giving a funky note), pine and mushroom aromas lead to a palate of dried cherry, cherry cola, light cedar and cranberry. Sour cherry on the long finish.

Brandborg 2007 Bench Lands Pinot Noir Umpqua Valley, $22.00: 3786 cases produced; Female: A lovely, delicate wine. Red and translucent in the glass. Aromas show raspberry with earthy notes. In the mouth, the wine opens to the red fruit with ever so slightly browning mushrooms, earth, cedar, and clove notes. Cleansing acid on the finish.
Male: Heavy toasty oak notes overpower the pretty strawberry aromas on the nose. The wine is lighter in the mouth with strawberry, cranberry and pretty pomegranate flavors. Here the oak becomes a backnote.

Brophy Clark 2007 Pinot Noir Santa Maria Valley, $30.00 Pink: 1100 cases produced; Female: Vanilla, bourbon notes and sweet oak aromas. Strong blueberry flavors highlighted by ripe cherry, pie spices, cola, and orange peel. Sweet oak through the finish.
Male: Lots of oak on the nose - the dominant feature but, "wow!" - in the mouth, the fruit pops with lots of red raspberry framed by the oak. The oak will integrate with time. What seemed awkward at first, turned out to be a really nice and elegant wine.

Brutocao Cellars 2007 Estate, Anderson Valley Philo Vineyard Pinot Noir Anderson Valley, $28.00: 1500 cases produced; Female: Delicate and slightly elusive aromas. Upon aeration, the wine begins to unfold. Vilolets, spring forest aromas, Bing cherries and subtle spice replicate on the palate. Lovely wine, delicate like the nose.
Male: Cherries and cranberries on the nose. The palate is mellow with light red fruit and brown spice backnotes.

Brutocao Cellars 2006 Estate, Reserve Philo Vineyard Pinot Noir Anderson Valley, $38.00: 724 cases produced

Canihan Family Cellars 2006 Estate Canihan Family vineyard Pinot Noir Carneros, $35.00: 710 cases produced; Female: Barnyard (not too much), rich caramel, and vanilla on the nose. Tart cherry surrounded by toasty notes in the mouth. Not extremely complex but who cares? It's delicious!
Male: The layered nose of strawberry, Dr. Pepper, rhubarb, and some cranberry open to raspberry flavors with vanilla, cinnamon, clove, and some cola notes. Nicely balanced with good acid.

Canihan Family Cellars 2007 Estate Canihan Family Vineyard Pinot Noir Carneros, $39.00: 290 cases produced

Casa Larga Vineyards 2007 Pinot Noir Finger Lakes, $12.99: 1000 cases produced; Female: Light strawberry aromas and flavors. Orange pekoe tea accents mid-palate. Light tannins with balanced acidity.
Male: Clear garnet in color. The aromas and flavors of sweet candied cherry and light strawberry are pleasant. Although the wine is slightly cloying it has good structure, weight and texture.

Champagne Pommery Wintertime Blanc de Noirs Reims, Champagne, $60.00: Female: Sweet pastry aromas leap from the glass and persist through the palate. Layers of yeast, citrusy lemon chiffon pie and apple flavors. A touch of bitterness on the finish.
Male: A fine bead in the glass greets you. Warm aromas of apple and lemon with some yeast notes adding a creamy layer to the apple and pear flavors mid-palate. "Pour me another glass."

Chandon Blanc de Noirs California, $22.00: Female: Almonds on the nose. Golden in color with a small hint of orange. Apple on the palate. Really quite sweet in the mouth with nutty notes on finish.
Male: Lemon and pomegranate aromas. Ripe apple fruit in the mouth. Grapefruit notes on the finish.

Ciccone 2007 Estate Bottled and Produced Suttons Bay, Michigan Pinot Noir Leelanau Peninsula, $18.00: 1500 cases produced; Female: Cola and earth notes on the nose. The palate displays light red fruit with interesting spice on the finish. Upon unveiling and discovering that this wine was from Michigan, we labeled this wine a "homerun."
Male: Simple yet pleasant aromatics. Opened with time to reveal light cherry and raspberry fruit with hints of mushroom and forest floor notes.

Claiborne & Churchill 2007 Pinot Noir Edna Valley, $25.00 Tan: 2380 cases produced; Female: In the glass the color is a vibrant purple-red with pronounced ripe cherry, blueberry and sour cherry aromas. The palate is lush with generous flavors of cherry, plum and a dash of anise spice. Nicely balanced with good acidity.
Male: Deep purple in color with a pink rim and medium opaque center. Candied cherry, cocoa powder, tart cherry, soft herbs, soy, and dusty notes on the nose prepare you for the nice flavors on entry - red and black cherry enhanced by sour plum. The mid-palate is sweet and lush. The oak integration is deft adding to the complexity of this wine.

Claiborne & Churchill 2007 (Runestone) Barrel Select Pinot Noir Edna Valley, $40.00: 206 cases produced; Female: Dark chocolate nose leading to dark blackberry fruit on the palate. More Syrah-like than Pinot-like. Chewy tannins.
Male: Muscular and concentrated on the nose and on the palate with a short but powerful finish. The wine lacks finesse.

Clary Ranch 2006 Estate Clary Ranch Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast, $39.50: 308 cases produced; Female: A delicate style - cherries and toast. Velvety texture with almost no tannins. Very pleasant. Well balanced though relatively simple.
Male: Light garnet core with a copper rim. The nose is delicate with floral notes, dried leaves and strawberries. Very nice. Flavors of sweet strawberry, copper penny, tart cherry, and red apple skin. Silky and seductive. A complex wine.

Clary Ranch 2007 Estate Clary Ranch Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast, $36.00: 458 cases produced; Female: Funky barnyard aromas dominate the nose. On the palate, sour cherry enhanced with orange rind a bit of clove. Sour fruit enters mid-palate and stays through the finish. Needs food - lamb or pork infused with clove and black pepper.
Male: Lovely texture, silky despite tart acidity. Cherry compote nose repeats on the palate with additions of stewed prunes and sour cherry notes. With air, depth and nuances are added.

Cono Sur 2008 Visión 68 Old Vine Vineyard Pinot Noir Colchagua Valley, $15.00: 30000 cases produced; Female: Like walking into a bakery, lovely yeasty aromas of bread baking joined by cherry, black cherry, and vanilla too. Nice acid on the finish. Lighter fruit on the palate than I expected but a lovely wine, nonetheless.
Male: Yummy, ripe Pinot. Balanced with a long lively finish. Delicious!

CRU 2008 Appellation Series Pinot Noir Santa Maria, $32.00: 317 cases produced; Female: Nice smoky blueberry and cooking spices on the nose. The palate tastes just like the aromas portend. The finish displays a layer of cocoa powder - quite appealing.
Male: The rich aromas of plum, cherry and blackberry with cola notes repeats on the palate. The fruit is juicy with black tea notes on the finish.

CRU 2008 Appellation Series Pinot Noir Santa Lucia Highlands, $32.00: 240 cases produced; Female: Raspberry, cranberry and pomegranate scents deliver the same flavors on the palate with cola and spice backnotes. Nice texture.
Male: The nose is a bit shy at first opening to rhubarb, cherry, fresh raspberry and violets. Fresh red fruit in the mouth with nice acidity on the finish.

CRU 2007 Vineyard Montage Pinot Noir Central Coast, $23.99 Blue: 3200 cases produced; Female: Complex, elegant and subtle. Dark cherry with earthy and wild mushroom accents. Great mouthfeel with a long, smooth finish.
Male: "Perhaps one of the most complex wines I tasted in the finals. Cherry and strawberry aromas with mineral overtones in the nose and in the mouth. Silky with extraordinary length.

Cumbre of Vine Hill 2007 Barrel 31 Pinot Noir Santa Cruz Mountains, $59.00 Lilac: 187 cases produced; Female: Deep purple-red in color. Tart blueberry and plum aromas with just a dab of sweet cherry. Brambly on the front palate with smoky tones enhancing the plum and raspberry flavors. Moderate weight and length. A very playful and enjoyable wine!
Male: Medium dark ruby in color. The nose emits black cherry, sweet vanilla and brown baking spices with wet leaf notes in the background. The flavors are complex with sour cherry, cranberry and forest floor accents. Nice acidity with dry wood tannins on the mostly cocoa and berry finish.

Darcie Kent Vineyards 2007 West Pinnacles Vineyard Pinot Noir Monterey, $30.00: 3100 cases produced; Female: Wet leaves, forest floor and strawberries define the aromatics. Fresh strawberries with mouthwatering acid on the palate. The fruit is delicate. "I want to like this wine more..."
Male: The aromatics are gentle displaying burnt brown sugar, rhubarb and slight orange notes. Light red fruit on the palate with citrus notes on the finish.

Darcie Kent Vineyards 2008 West Pinnacles Vineyard Pinot Noir Monterey, $30.00: 1900 cases produced; Female: Dried cherry aromas with a hint of smoke, cherry and mushrooms. Aromas are replicated on entry through the finish with the addition of forest floor notes. The wine is showing a bit of age but it's classic Pinot Noir.
Male: Candied cherry on the nose. Quite fruity in the mouth with a touch of orange peel on the finish. Good balance.

David Bruce Winery 2005 Estate David Bruce Estate Vineyard Pinot Noir Santa Cruz Mountains, $55.00: 281 cases produced; Female: Toasty raspberry and raspberry jam aromas carries through to mid-palate where lighter strawberry notes jump in to complete the experience. Great acid with a long finish. Yum!
Male: Classic Pinot nose - cherry with a hint of cola. Fruit forward. Mouth filling palate.

David Bruce Winery 2007 Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast, $30.00: 9376 cases produced; Female: Cherry, raspberry. black cherry, and oak aromas replicate on the palate. The oak is dominant now and what lingers.
Male: A big, powerful wine. Intense Syrah-like nose and palate. Heavy brown-sugar coated red cherry with smoky/toasty tones.

David Bruce Winery 2007 Pinot Noir Russian River Valley, $30.00: 6372 cases produced; Female: Fresh strawberry aromas. Fresh strawberry and raspberry on entry with lemon driven citrus on the finish. Bright, clean and crisp with mouthwatering acids to frame the fruit.
Male: Mushroom and earth surround red cherry on the nose and repeat in the mouth. Cola notes join mid. Light bodied, bright cherry on the palate with smoke and earth showing on the finish.

David Bruce Winery 2007 Pinot Noir Anderson Valley, $42.00 Red: 759 cases produced; Female: An exotic potpourri of cherry, plum, drying rose petals, vanilla, and violets. Concentrated rich red fruit on the palate with licorice, cinnamon, rosemary, and a slight earthiness. True to varietal.
Male: Beautifully structured, aromatics of cherry and cola. This is mouth coating joy juice with light cinnamon notes on the extremely long finish.

David Bruce Winery 2007 Pinot Noir Santa Maria Valley, $42.00: 1276 cases produced; Female: Deep crimson with a purple-red rim. Smoky dark fruit aromas of pomegranate and blueberry with a dusty cherry trailer. Sweet blueberry and raspberry flavors with dusty cocoa. Hints of clove and cedar mid to late.
Male: Big and bold, this Pinot has an almost a Syrah-like profile. Meaty, smoky blueberry and black cherry aromas. The palate is juicy with dark fruit flavors and black pepper accents.

David Bruce Winery 2007 Pinot Noir Santa Cruz Mountains, $30.00 Yellow: 1232 cases produced; Female: Aromas of strawberry jam, baking spices and vanilla bean. Raspberry flavors accented with lemon. Light and lively in the mouth finishing with vibrant acidity.
Male: The nose is elusive at first revealing some cranberry, red cherry and forest floor aromas. The palate is exotic with pomegranate accented by smoked tamarind. Nice zingy acidity on the elegant finish.

Davis Bynum 2007 Russian River Valley Pinot Noir Russian River Valley, $35.00: 6753 cases produced; Female: Licorice, ginger and cedar on the nose. Flavors of black cherries, dates, black olives with black pepper notes. Easy to like texture. This will have a good, long life.

Fore Family Vineyards 2007 Pinot Noir Napa Carneros, $34.00: 410 cases produced; Female: Spice, earth, light smoke at first. The complexity grows like the mouthfeel, It grabs you. Great acid, almost a lenon curd finish. Good food wine!
Male: Very lively acid. Forward fruit. Very open and appealing with fresh cherries and plums. A bit heavy handed on the tannins.

Freixenet Elyssia Brut Sparkling Cava, Spain, $18.00: Female: The nose is elusive at first but opens to cranberry notes with mushroom low notes. This is a pleasant, drier style with sweet fruit kicking in mid-palate then plenty of acidity on the finish. This would be delicious with grilled salmon. Great blend of 85% Pinot Noir and 15% Trepat.
Male: Sweet blood orange and green apple aromas. The palate is heavy and full with raspberry and pomegranate flavors.

Fulcrum 2007 Pinot Noir Anderson Valley, $52.00: 100 cases produced; Female: Earth, herbaceous nose with a hint of barnyard. Cherry, black cherry and brown spice are layered on the palate. A lovely addition of herbs persists through the finish. Good acidity.
Male: Sweet aromas and flavors of cherry and raspberry repeat on the palate as ripe fruit with added interest of forest floor notes through the finish. Nice overall balance enhanced by oak elements.

Fulcrum 2007 La Encantada Pinot Noir Santa Rita Hills, $54.00: 50 cases produced; Female: Black cherry with cola backnotes on the nose, replicating on the palate with heavy coffee influence. This is really a big wine - a nice wine - but not a typical Pinot.
Male: The aromatics are somewhat medicinal but open to a lush palate of soft pomegranate, cherry, spices, and herbal notes.

Gloria Ferrer 2006 Pinot Noir Carneros, $28.00: 20155 cases produced; Female: Brown baking spice on the nose with strawberry notes in the mouth highlighted by the spices. Consistent from nose through the finish. There is a meaty quality here, a dense and masculine profile to this wine. "Personally, would like a touch more acid on the finish.
Male: An enjoyable wine now but will be better with time. Lighter, restrained aromas with a hint of mint and some smokiness. Light red fruit with leather notes on the finish. Not fully integrated as yet.

Hahn Estates 2006 Pinot Noir Monterey, $20.00: 30447 cases produced; Female: This is a perfect wine to enjoy with grilled salmon. A lighter style of Pinot Noir with cranberry aromas replicating on the palate. Clove and coffee back notes on the finish.
Male: Soft strawberry fruit with hints of allspice and oranges lead to a soft, juicy palate with nice acidity. Good finish. This wine is still a little tight but should get even better with time.

Male: Rich and ripe aromas emanating from the glass (black cherries and baking spices) are very appealing. Delicious black cherry compote and vanilla flavors. Judicious use of oak creates a creaminess on the palate that is wonderful!

Handley Cellars 2006 Holmes Ranch Anderson Valley Pinot Noir Anderson Valley, $40.00: 715 cases produced; Female: Cola, tar, cardamom, and caraway aromas lead to a rich and soft palate of cherry and ginger with hints of cured beef. Good depth and great acid.
Male: Scents of orange peel, earth notes and currants arise from the glass. Oak and red fruit is integrated on the palate. The tight finish shows some tannins with pomegranate moving to broader cassis flavors.

Male: Cherry pie filing on the nose. The palate is less focused with some cherry and raspberry flavors. Decent acid and chalky tannins. A touch warm on the finish.

Heart O' The Mountain 2007 100% Pommard Clone Pinot Noir Santa Cruz Mountains, $58.00 Coral: 25 cases produced; Female: Medium purple-red in color. Blueberry and pomegranate aromas replicate on entry. Cola and vanilla notes mid-palate expanding with mushrooms and earthiness through the finish. A lovely rich wine with plenty of acidity.
Male: Delicate aromas of candied red cherry, honey and walnuts repeat on the palate. A very youthful wine. The tannins are still very prominent. This wine should age nicely.

Male: Raspberry with baking spice aromas. Cherry and raspberry flavors with smooth tannins on the long finish.

Huber 2007 Estate Grown Pinot Noir Santa Rita Hills, $38.00: 450 cases produced; Female: Cherry, strawberry aromas with cola notes repeat on the palate. Light acidity through the finish.

Male: Medium ruby core. The nose is closed with hints of red fruit, cola, cedar, and earth. The flavors are many layered - cranberries, dark cherries, plum, and oak spices. Amazing length and purity of fruit. The crisp acid shows a cranberry edge. The tannins are in balance. Very complex.

Male: Tangerine, strawberry, and toasted oak. Red and dark red fruit on the palate with oak overtones. Good acidity.

Male: Cherry cola on the nose. This is a dense and extracted wine. Big and bold ripe fruit in the mouth. This is a New World classic. Aging potential with class!

Male: Dark medium fruit, mostly plum, with lots of vanilla on the tight nose. Plum with chocolate and orange accents in the mouth. Long finish. Good structure. Would be great with Duck a la Cerise.

Mahoney Vineyards 2007 All Estate Pinot Noir Carneros, $20.00: 3500 cases produced; Female: The nose is many layered, earthy with lovely mushroom notes enhance the black cherry aromas and then there are some roasted meat backnotes. The lush fruit in the mouth is unexpected but very welcome. Great acid. "Really nice!"
Male: Cherry and cassis aromas evolve to sweet cherry and blueberry flavors with a hint of greenery. The palate is uneven at present.

Light strawberry aromas repeat on the palate with the addition of delicate touches of lavender on the finish. A very feminine wine. Enjoy with lighter style foods to enhance both.
Male: Red and black cherry, eucalyptus and dried herb aromas repeat on the complex palate with the addition of cranberry on the finish. Well balanced. A good example of lighter style Pinots.

Male: Tangerine and peach on the nose. Light, fresh cherry and aged Gouda cheese on the palate. Good balance of fruit and acidity. Orange and tangy lemon on the finish.

On the palate, it is rich and seamless with black cherry, raspberry jam, cola and refined vanillan oak flavors. "Love the elegant finish."
Male: The color in the glass is brick with a marrow color to the edges. The expressive nose shows mostly red fruit with a touch of cola. The texture is like cashmere - lush, complex and clean. Flavors of blackberry, plums and vanilla. There is a "sense of place" to this wine.

Male: Scents of lemon zest and red fruit. The front palate has a solid core of quality fruit. Mid-palate displays nice integration of oak and vanilla and carries through the long finish.

Male: The nose is earthy with wet gravel notes. Light fruit throughout with dusty tannins on the finish.

Pessagno 2007 Estate Grown Four Boys Vineyard Pinot Noir Santa Lucia Highlands, $55.00: 192 cases produced; Female: The intense dark nose says..."watch out!" The masculine displays dark red and black fruit, smoke, mushrooms, leather, and dark spice notes. The aromas say Syrah but the fruit flavors are Pinot-like when unveiled. Almost as if the wine is wearing an overcoat.
Male: A big, almost Syrah-like style of Pinot Noir. Cherry liqueur and wild berry aromas with white pepper accents on the nose. Dark, rich flavors of plum and wild dark berries are framed by lots of oak.

Pessagno 2007 Estate Grown Lucia Highland Vineyard Pinot Noir Santa Lucia Highlands, $28.00: 1224 cases produced; Female: Vanilla and cola aromas opens to black cherry flavors with hints of citrus throughout. Rolls nicely on the palate. Balanced. Lingering finish with crisp acidity.
Male: Medium ruby in color with an electric ruby rim. The nose is clean but closed at first but opens slowly to strawberry stems, raspberries, and some vanilla and other oak elements. A dry wine with medium acids and alcohol. The flavors are complex - ripe black cherry enhanced by oak spices, forest floor notes, vanilla and Kaluha on the finish.

Phillips Hill 2008 Oppenlander Vineyard Pinot Noir Mendocino, $45.00: 600 cases produced; Female: Oak, vanilla, warm spices, red fruit and then more oak. The lovely black fruit on the palate is trounced by the oak. I'd like to try this again in 6-8 months.
Male: Vibrant, deep blackberry, cherry, cinnamon, clove and vanilla on the nose and palate. Light tannins within the firm structure. Lots of oak here. Needs time to integrate.

Phillips Hill 2008 Ring Of Fire Pinot Noir Anderson Valley, $45.00: 150 cases produced; Female: Forest floor aromas open to dark cherry flavors with hints of mushroom. There are dark toasted herbs on the finish. The acids are pleasant.
Male: Aromas and palate are perfectly consistent - the orange peel, forest floor, and dried cherry expand through the long finish.

Philo Ridge Vineyards 2006 Pinot Noir Anderson Valley, $28.00: 400 cases produced; Female: The eucalyptus aromas imbue the light red fruit flavors of cranberry and rhubarb with a hint of mint on the plate, clove entering the mix late. Nice wine but I would have liked more acid.
Male: The nose is charred at first and then some dark cherry aromas. On the palate, smoky cherry with hints of orange zest. Heavy wood driven spice diminishes the fruit mid to late.

PINOT 2006 Pinot Noir Central Coast, $17.99: 500 cases produced; Female: Dark but not opaque in the glass. The nose is a bit odd - inviting caramel with underlying pine and evergreen aromas that are reminiscent of crunching on leaves. The mouthfeel is rich but the tannins step heavily on the fruit.
Male: Brambly and very ripe fruit aromas. On the palate, the fruit is there but quickly overpowered by the tannins. It's a nice wine but little balance and no elegance.

Pinot Evil Pinot Noir Hungary, $19.99: Female: A lighter style of Pinot Noir. Cranberry, strawberry jam and touch of lime of the nose. Light red fruit in the mouth - pomegranate with green tea notes. Cleansing acid.
Male: The nose is confusing - sweet cherry aromas with bitter backnotes, The same disparity on the palate - bitter and sweet simultaneously.

Prix Vineyards 2007 Reserve Estate Bottled Fagan Creek Vineyard: Block 38 Pinot Noir Napa Valley, $50.00: 275 cases produced; Female: A beautiful color in the glass. Lavender and cherry aromas. Dark cherry with lavender notes in the mouth. Very pleasant with good acidity.
Male: Black cherry and cinnamon on the nose. On the palate it is a delicate wine with strawberry and raspberry tones.

Redwood Creek 2008 Pinot Noir Vin d'Pays D'oc France, $7.99: 300000 cases produced; Female: A nice sipper. Red fruit - cherries and raspberrries with cola notes mid to late.
Male: Simple and pleasant. Cherry and cola notes on the light palate. A nuce quaffer.

Male: Cherry, leather, bacon fat, and oak in the glass. Full and rich in the mouth opening with time. Impressive length expanding throughout.

RN ESTATE 2007 Fiddlestix Vineyard Pinot Noir Sta Rita Hills, $55.00: 120 cases produced; Female: Very exotic. Eucalyptus, camphor, licorice, and black pepper on the nose. Very dark cherry flavors surrounded and enhance by sandalwood notes. Lovely!
Male: Sour cherry, citrus, smoke and lavender on the nose. Red and black cherry framed by oak elements. Vanilla notes and nice acid on the finish.

Robledo 2006 Estate Rancho Rincon Pinot Noir Los Carneros, $40.00 Green: 900 cases produced; Female: Oak and smoke dominate the nose at first with earth and tar notes. Wild cherry and dark berry components add nice depth to the palate. Aeration brings out more complex and beautiful aromas enhancing the enjoyment of this wine. Should age gracefully.
Male: The layered and complex nose displays violets, smoke, earth, cranberry and dried cherry. The palate replicates the nose. Medium-fine grained tannins complete the package.

Rodney Strong Vineyards 2008 Russian River Valley, Estate Pinot Noir Russian River Valley, $20.00: 65000 cases produced; Female: A youngster. All of the pieces are there but they haven't melded as yet. Time should show this as a very nice wine. Barnyard and light red fruit aromas. Strawberry turning to sour cherries on the palate with quite a bit of espresso masking the fruit mid through late.
Male: Cherry and strawberry on the elegant nose. Opens to darker fruit flavors accented by pine, earth, and forest floor notes. Balanced.

Row Eleven 2006 Pinot Noir Santa Maria Valley, $36.00 Gunmetal: 2000 cases produced; Female: Luscious nose of sweet cherry, rhubarb and dusty tea leaves. A hint of cola appears on the palate to complement the fruit flavors. The texture is elegant...silky and mouth filling. I like how the palate expands.
Male: Medium ruby in color. The brambly aromatics open to a soft and velvety palate, Good fruit concentration of lush ripe cherry and red plum. Good acidity and oak integration. Soft tannins. Nicely balanced.

Russian Hill 2007 Estate Vineyards Pinot Noir Russian River Valley, $36.00 Dark Gray: 1106 cases produced; Female: Lovely complex fusion of fruit, spice and delicate oak on the nose. The palate displays fresh tart cherry, red plum, slight black pepper, and vanilla. There is an appealing creaminess to the palate and then tart acid on the long finish.
Male: "Heavenly." The nose is super rich with ripe, spicy cherry. The palate is terrific...complex with black cherry framed by subtle oak. Red currant is prominent on the elegant finish.

Russian Hill 2006 Leras Vineyard Pinot Noir Russian River Valley, $45.00: 223 cases produced; Female: Cherry notes on the nose leading to strawberry and lemon peel flavors in the mouth. Black tea elements and nice acid the finish.
Male: The nose is warm and spicy with nutmeg dusted ripe cherries. The palate has nice weight. The flavors are consistent with the nose. Good finish. Well balanced and highly enjoyable.

Sand Hill Wines 2007 Durell Vineyard Pinot Noir Sonoma Valley, $50.00: 444 cases produced; Female: Thanksgiving spices on the nose. Warm cherry pie flavors on entry through mid-palate turning to sour cherry on the finish. Mouthwatering acidity makes this a wonderful food wine.
Male: Cinnamon bark and black cherry aromas and flavors. Solid structure with light toast notes. Good integration of fruit and oak. Really like the racy cherry finish.

Scheid Vineyards 2007 Estate Pinot Noir Monterey, $30.00: 1800 cases produced; Female: Floral notes highlights strawberries on the nose. Nice earth and springlike flavor accents to the red currant that runs throughout. Touches of dill, caraway, and rye toast hints of the finish.
Male: Nice nose. The palate shows a rich blend of black cherry, cranberry, and raspberry finishing with firm tannins. Balanced.

Scheid Vineyards 2005 Reserve Pinot Noir Monterey, $50.00: 229 cases produced; Female: Alluring smoked cherry, rose petal and preserved spice aromas in the glass. The palate is soft and understated. The flavors are consistent and enduring. Old world styling - absolutely a great food wine.

Male: Menthol, roses and black cherry on the nose. The aromas replicate on the palate. Medium bodied. Bracing acidity. A very youthful wine. Might work really well with lightly seared tuna.

Scott Cellars 2008 First Mesa Sierra Madre Vineyard Pinot Noir Santa Maria Valley, $36.00 Light Yellow: 147 cases produced; Female: Woodsy with bright dark cherry, red plum, pomegranate, and black pepper aromas. On the palate there is rich cherry, sage, big pomegranate, plum and well integrated oak.
Male: A big, rich almost dessert-like Pinot Noir. Black cherry, dark chocolate and mint aromas and flavors. Velvety on the palate. "A chocolate truffle of a wine. At the end of the meal, this would be a treat!"

Segura Viudas Aria Sparkling Pinot Noir Cava, Spain, $12.00: Female: The color in the glass is deep, almost like a light Pinot Noir. Dried cherry aromas repeat on the palate. A simple but nice wine. Great for sweeter wine lovers.
Male: Red fruit aromas in the glass, raspberry and pomegranate, replicate on the palate. The mid-palate is lush with strawberry flavors hints of lemon highlight the cleansing acidity on the finish.

Shandel's Oppenlander Vineyard 2007 Estate Grown Pinot Noir Mendocino County, $40.00 Orange: 250 cases produced; Female: A complex but subtle wine. Cherries, raspberries and minerals combine to make this a literally "mouthwatering" nose. The palate confirms the aromas. Medium plus acid with tannins to balance. Pair with rare duck breast for a perfect meal.
Male: Coffee, red and black cherry with a dusty edge in the glass. Rich berry and herb entry. Lush berry, tar, cola, tea, and herbs mid-palate with mushroom, deep darker berries and some tannin on the finish.

Male: Smoky with hints of dry earth and Bing cherry. Though a bit hot, the fruit is surprisingly expansive on the palate. Solid cherry core. Nice finish.

Silverwood 2007 Reserve Pinot Noir Mornington Peninsula Australia, $50.00: 68 cases produced; Female: A youthful wine. The nose of forest floor and dark black cherry repeats on the palate joined by coffee, clove, tarragon, and herbal elements. The tannins are still pretty aggressive. Lay this baby down and taste in 12-18 months. You will be rewarded.
Male: Sarsaparilla and light cherry aromas. Dried red fruit on the palate. Well balanced. The tannins are still prominent. Taste again in a year.

Sonoma Coast Vineyards 2006 Petersen Vineyard Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast, $55.00 Light Blue: 900 cases produced; Female: Consistent from the aromas of cherry, raspberry and blackberry accented by leather and oak through the seamless palate and balanced finish.
Male: Pretty ruby red. Dark cherry fruit with a touch of kirsch and earth on the nose. Sweet attack with good depth on the palate - dark cherry and cola at the core. Nice finish too.

Sonoma Coast Vineyards 2007 Freestone Hills Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast, $40.00 White: 450 cases produced; Female: Blueberry pie and vanilla aromas open to ripe cherry, raspberry and plum flavors accented with nutmeg and white pepper. This wine is balanced with well integrated oak and zippy acidity.
Male: Cinnamon, blackberry jam and cola aromas. In the mouth, this is a great example of well made New World Pinot - black cherry flavors, ripe but with good balance and nice acidity. Well done!

Spy Valley 2008 Pinot Noir Marlborough, $29.00: 8106 cases produced; Female: Aromas of tree bark and forest floor followed by mushroom, dried cherry and hints of tobacco replicating on the palate. Softening on the finish and then a dash of nice acidity.
Male: Light elegant cherry aromas and flavors. Rather feminine in character. Soft sour cherry, pomegranate and sweet oak flavors entry through mid-palate. The finish is spicy with crisp acidity.

Stephen & Walker 2008 Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast, $46.00: 250 cases produced; Female: Black cherry and hints of mint on the nose. Sweet black cherry flavors with nice acid on the finish.
Male: Smoky, jammy blackberry aromas with wood, black cherry and cola too are all delivered onto the palate in varying degrees. Good mouthfeel and good acids on this medium-bodied wine.

Stephen & Walker 2006 Pinot Noir Monterey, $39.00: 650 cases produced; Female: Dominant aroma is raspberry. Flavors have more breadth with raspberry carrying through but joined by dark cherry, licorice, and cedar mid through the long, firm finish.
Male: The nose opens with a touch of barnyard then cream and fresh strawberries. Impressive acid and chalky tannins are balanced by black cherry, blackberry, vanilla, and chocolate flavors. A big and very impressive wine.

TR Elliott 2007 Three Plumes Pinot Noir Russian River Valley, $40.00 Khaki: 150 cases produced; Female: Plum, raspberry, baking spice and hints of cedar jump from the glass. Juicy and full on the palate with tangerine, floral notes and black raspberry on the end. It's very fruity on entry and moves into a great wine as the complexity is unveiled. Nice earthy tones on the finish.
Male: Candied cherry, forest notes, honey, and oak aromas replicate beautifully on the palate. The entry of honeyed fruit is nicely balanced. Dried herbs, forest floor and sweet oak on the finish.

Truchard Vineyards 2006 Pinot Noir Carneros Napa Valley, $35.00: 4503 cases produced; Female: Black cherry aromas replicate on the palate where they are enhanced by tarragon and rosemary accents mid through the finish. An interesting wine. Cries for meat - either a rare grilled steak or rack of lamb. Yum!
Male: Earthy, woodsy nose leading to berries framed by vanilla on the palate. I want more from this wine. Will it evolve with time?

Male: In the glass - earth and cherries. In the mouth - fruity (mostly black cherry) with some acid and lots of new wood. Should integrate with time.

Villa Mt Eden 2007 Grand Reserve Pinot Noir Russian River Valley, $23.00: 1120 cases produced; Female: Light ruby in color. The aromas are smoky surrounding and enhancing the cherry and rhubarb fruit. Fruit-forward palate with a nice spice profile. There are pronounced wood tones on the finish.
Male: Elegant...spicy, fruity...like mulled wine (allspice, cloves, orange peel. Not a subtle wine but very appealing.

Dark and weighty on the palate with a meaty, husky quality. Blue and black fruits with lots of earth and tar. This is a deep and brooding wine with lots of chocolate in the background. This is a Pinot for those who love the big, bolder styles.
Male: The aroma is reminiscent of cherry pie fresh out of the oven. Black fruit and fig components on the palate with dill on the finish.
